To the Esteemed Lady Noosheen Hashemi
President of the HAND Foundation
And henceforth, Her Majesty, the Queen of Iran’s Economy
Greetings and congratulations,
The delightful news of the imminent appointment of one of your intellectual and spiritual protégés — Dr. Seyed Ali Madanizadeh — as Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance of the Islamic Republic of Iran has stirred waves of joy and pride among admirers of the Chicago School and the hopeful heirs of the Chilean Miracle.
At this historic juncture, it is only appropriate to recognize you — the architect and spiritual matriarch of Iran’s “Chicago Boys” — with the title Queen of Iran’s Economy: a title befitting your tireless efforts in sponsoring liberal economic minds and enabling their return to the homeland. It is they who now, with expert precision, administer Friedman’s time-tested prescriptions to the long-suffering body of Iran’s economy.
Madam,
Now that the reins of Iran’s economic policymaking are gradually being entrusted to the graduates of your foundation, your name rightfully deserves to echo — not only in the corridors of Western diplomacy, but also in the footnotes of national budgets and the fine print of inflationary policy packages. How apt that the Chicago School, after its Chilean rehearsal, now takes center stage in Tehran. And how poetic that the doctrine of structural adjustment has been rebranded as “justice-oriented growth” in the Iranian household basket.
And so, while extending our congratulations on this latest triumph and acknowledging your remarkable prowess in elite engineering, we offer our sincere wishes for your continued success on the path of globalized pricing, privatized assets, and, ultimately, integration into the ranks of the “developed” — that is, deeply unequal — world.
With the highest respect — and a generous touch of irony,
Seyed Yasser Jebraily
Former Head, Center for Strategic Evaluation and Supervision of the Implementation of Macro Policies of Iran
