The concept for adapting "The Green Knight" came to director and writer David Lowery as a child, while he was setting up a diorama of action figures (from the film 'Willow' 1988) in his backyard.

Lowery initially had no intention of casting Dev Patel (as the part of Gawain is usually assigned to a white Anglo-Saxon to match geographical accuracy), but when he caught him modeling in a Zegna fashion spread, he was struck by how regal he looked.
