Do outdoor activities boost cognitive abilities?
Sample: 45 children aged 11 to 13.
Each child participated in two sessions of physical activity in random order - once outdoors and once indoors. There was at least a week between the physical activity sessions. Before, immediately after, and 45 minutes after the physical activity, the children underwent cognitive function assessments.
Shown: outdoor physical activity leads to more significant improvements in cognitive functions. For example, greater improvements in reaction speed, accuracy, working memory, etc. Heart rates were higher during outdoor activities. However, subjectively, children enjoyed the activities equally, whether indoors or outdoors. There are several possible reasons for this effect - either the natural outdoor environment aids brain recovery after fatigue, or being outdoors helps reduce stress.
