As early as my first trip with the Bedouins in South Sinai, I came across a word that seems to have great significance for them: raaha or more precisely: raaha fi-l-baal, which means: “peace of mind.” The most accurate translation into English appears to be “serenity,” because the Bedouin raaha includes exactly what serenity originally stands for: a life without fear, always remaining calm, being relaxed, no stress, not letting panic take over.

A serene person has patience. He lets things unfold, maintains an overview of the whole picture, sees that he is part of the flow and entrusts himself to it. Happiness cannot be planned; you can only live in the present.
