Earthquake Early Warning Systems
Real-time earthquake early warning systems are designed to detect and alert people about earthquakes before the ground shaking arrives. These systems use a network of sensors placed throughout an area that can detect the initial wave, or P-wave, of an earthquake. P-waves travel faster than the more damaging S-waves that cause the ground shaking, so if the early warning system detects a P-wave, it can quickly issue an alert to people in the affected area before the shaking arrives.
