Navigating through musical genres and their subcategories can often feel like unraveling a tangled web, particularly when delving into the realm of dance and electronic music. Techno, in particular, has undergone a significant evolution, giving rise to numerous subgenres that add to the complexity. What once may have been simplified into categories like "Detroit techno" and "German techno" has now expanded to include variations such as acid, hardcore, dub, and minimal, among others.
At its core, techno typically features a synthesized 4/4 kick drum, a BPM ranging from 120 to 140, repetitive percussion beats and loops, and extensive use of synthesizers. While it's often characterized by its darker tones within the dance music spectrum, not all iterations strictly adhere to this convention. However, percussion remains a fundamental element, contributing to its distinctive sound.
