HKU officially bans certain HKUSU Council members from accessing campus and uni facilities

Today (Sep 2), Registrar Jeannie Tsang emailed certain members of the HKUSU Council to inform them of the decision. She claimed that the management “do not have sufficient information to address or remove the risk concerns” in relation to the students’ participation in the July 7 meeting. Hence, the students are subjected to the “risk mitigating measures” approved by the HKU Council, denying them access to the University until further notice.

In response to media inquiry, the spokesperson for HKU only disclosed that 18 students were not subjected to the “risk mitigating measures”, but did not mention their decision regarding the remaining 26 students. The spokesperson also said that “in the spirit of education”, the University hoped that the students involved could “reflect deeply”.

HKUSU Motion Case: 4 student leaders to be mentioned in court again on Oct 15

Arrested under the charge of “advocating terrorism” with an alternative charge of “inciting others to wound police officers”, the four arrested student leaders appeared in the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts today (Sep 14).
In their last court appearance on Aug 15, the prosecutors requested the case to be adjourned to Oct 15 for the police to assess digital evidence. Under the defence’s objection, the court arranged to meet again on Sep 14 to track the prosector’s progress. The prosectors reported today that the police have yet to complete their assessment of the seized digital devices. Designated National Security judge Peter Law Tak-Chuen decided to maintain the proposed court date and adjourn the case to Oct 15.

With the exception of Anthony Yung, the other three students will remain in remand since their arrest on Aug 18. The case will be mentioned again on the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on Oct 15.

According to multiple media reports, HKU intends to remove the Pillar of Shame from campus.

The statue was donated to the recently disbanded Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China by Danish artist Jens Galschiot to commemorate the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. It was later installed in campus by HKUSU before the Handover.
Richard Tsoi, Company Secretary of the Alliance, said that HKU should recognise the statue as a property of the Alliance and believed that the University must respect all stakeholders’ opinions before making any decisions.
A spokesperson for HKU said that the University will review risk management measures and the use of facilities on campus from time to time, and will not respond to speculative reports.

Professor Xiang Zhang reappointed as HKU President for another 5-year term

In an email sent this morning (Oct 3), HKU Council Chairman Arthur Li announced that President Xiang Zhang’s appointment has been extended to 2028. He emphasised that the Council’s “unanimous” decision to extend Zhang’s appointment was due to significant progress he made in ventures such as the HKU-Shenzhen campus development project.
Before Zhang’s appointment, the then Vice-President Terry Au commented that HKU needed a high-level member who “can smooth our path in China”. Since he assumed office in 2018, Zhang made significant progress in developing an HKU campus in China, and the HKU Beijing Centre was established within his term. In the opening ceremony of the Centre, Zhang claimed that “the very aim of HKU’s establishment in 1911 has been to serve China”. Recently, Zhang signed a memorandum with the Shenzhen government to set up a campus in the city.
In July 2019, Zhang released a statement condemning the occupation of the Legislative Council complex on July 1, saying that he was “disheartened by the violence”. In May 2020, Zhang joined the Hong Kong Coalition “in his personal capacity”. He later issued a joint statement alongside the Presidents of CUHK, PolyU, EdUHK, and Lingnan to support the national security law.

In a statement released yesterday, the Law Association, HKUSU, opposes the proposed revisions of the legal aid system. The suggestion is to have the Director of the Legal Aid Department assign legal representatives to eligible applicants in criminal legal aid cases. The Association is concerned that this suggestion will exploit the rights of applicants to choose their own legal representatives, a right protected by the principle of equality before the law in Article 25 of the Basic Law. If the suggestion comes into effect, “applicants in criminal legal aid cases are bound to face a dilemma, struggling to make a choice between being forced to accept the unsatisfactory legal representatives assigned by the Department, and being unable to hire a legal representative at all”.

【守護港大聯署小組解散啦 | StandUpHKUers, Thank you & Goodbye】

Dear friends,

We’re hereby announcing the dissolution of the petition group.
Thank you for your support along the way. Whether it’s in our events or somewhere on social media, seeing you have given us the encouragement we needed to keep going.
So why leave now? Well, most of our members have graduated, and those who haven’t are close to the finish line. We’re busy with different things — some have family to take care of, some have friends from 2019 to look after, some are hunting for jobs, and some are searching for relationships. We’re disbanding for one reason and one reason only: sheer laziness.
So after much thought, we’ve decided that it’s time to say goodbye. This will probably conclude our updates on this account, but our members will continue to meet up from time to time.
Finally, we ask that you take care of yourselves, and take care of each other.

Yours truly,
Standuphkuers Petition Group
