People who read for pleasure in their free time have a better imagination than those who prefer to watch TV.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Reading books is supposed to be more conducive to one’s imagination than watching TV. In my opinion, though TV illustrations somehow stimulate people’s imagination, books are more powerful in bringing the unknown within our grasp in a more colourful way.

Admittedly, watching TV yields a number of advantages for people’s mental faculties. The more a person watches TV, the easier it will be to form concepts about basic images. That is, a young child without either first-hand or second-hand exposure, say, to nature may fail to imagine animals, forming incorrect structures in their mind while hearing about them. To think of a lizard in the right form and shape, for instance, a child should first see this either in real life or on TV. These concepts decidedly lay the foundation for the development of children’s ability to form images in their brains, as further operations of their imagination will depend on the knowledge they gain about the outer world.

Nevertheless, I am convinced that the role of books in cognitive development is overwhelmingly significant. Despite the possibility of TV teaching young children about the outer world, its benefits are only limited to a certain degree, and at some point, this activity starts stifling imagination and creativity. This is because TV presents images in an effortless way, preventing people from making use of their mental capabilities. By contrast, books leave space for readers’ own reflection, and words in well-written ones are also descriptive enough to help them imagine the right scenarios. For example, unlike TV, which forces fixed images into viewers’ minds, adventure books featuring monsters and freaks allow readers to create images on their own, which apparently benefits their imagination.

To conclude, it is true that a certain level of exposure to the world is ensured by watching TV, but this activity does more harm than good to one’s imagination. Books, on the contrary, allow readers to create personal reflections and therefore encourage creative thinking.

The table makes a comparison of online and department stores in terms of the number of businesses in operation, profit and revenue figures, and growth rate in Australia in 2011.

Overall, the number of online stores was considerably higher than their physical counterparts, aligning closely with their growth percentage. By contrast, sales revenue and profit presented almost identical numbers, with the former holding a slight edge.

In 2011, there were 368 stores operating on the internet, a figure significantly higher than department shops (67). Similarly, the rate of growth for the former was much more substantial (0.6%) in relative to the latter (0.4%).

In stark contrast, profit and revenue figures had a narrower advantage for online retail. The respective figures accounted for 863 and 13,400 Australian dollars compared to $807 and $12,700 for department stores.

⚡️Stop Overusing and Misusing “ACTUALLY”!

Many learners use actually everywhere, but it’s often used to correct and contradict.

Correcting:
A: You’re from Tashkent, right?
B: Actually, I’m from Khiva.

Contradicting:
People think IELTS is about vocabulary. Actually, it’s about clarity.

Actually, I like music. (Wrong! Nothing to correct or contradict)

Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued that railways should receive the largest share of government funding rather than roads. While I acknowledge the economic and environmental merits of the former, I, for the most part, disagree that roads should be neglected.

Admittedly, the development of railways can yield a number of positive outcomes. First and foremost, trains have traditionally been among the most cost-effective means of transportation, reducing logistics expenses and making end products more affordable. This is because they consume less fuel than other transport modes and can carry substantial amounts of cargo, thanks to their robust mechanisms that enable them to haul multiple carriages. Moreover, railway transport is widely considered to be less detrimental to the environment, as moving the same volume of goods by road would require a significantly higher number of vehicles, thereby increasing the carbon footprint.

Nevertheless, I am not convinced that motorways and highways should be regarded as secondary. Above all, they play a crucial role in connecting different regions, offering not only speed advantages but also the opportunity to explore local attractions en route. Cars are often faster and allow travelers to make flexible stops, which enhances the overall travel experience. Furthermore, prioritizing road infrastructure can also lead to improvements in public transportation systems. Buses and other passenger vehicles provide greater route flexibility, whereas railways, whether underground or overground, often fail to connect travelers’ exact starting points with their final destinations. These aspects undoubtedly give roads a competitive edge over railways.

To conclude, it is true that railway transport is both economical and environmentally friendly. However, it does not provide the same level of convenience and travel satisfaction as road transport, which is why I am against allocating a larger share of the budget to railways at the expense of roads.

Do you really think you’re free?

We often talk loudly about freedom, yet here’s the truth.

Most of us are tied to external factors. We’ve grown so attached to social media that it has started influencing our lives in many ways. We wake up and check our phones before saying good morning to the person next to us. Our moods depend on likes, comments, and views. They, in reality, mean nothing once the screen goes off.

We call it “connection,” but it’s more like dependency. We crave validation, chase attention, and fear being forgotten. And all the while, we lose touch with what freedom truly means. That’s the ability to live on our own terms, not according to an algorithm.

Set yourself free

🔥It’s quite common to get a topic in IELTS Speaking Part 2 that you have absolutely no idea about.

Of course, it’s often recommended to base your answers on your real experiences, as that usually helps you speak more fluently. However, even if the topic is something you’ve never experienced, don’t panic and just use your imagination and come up with something believable.

Remember, the test doesn’t assess your knowledge, but your language skills. So it’s perfectly fine to bend the truth a little if it helps you demonstrate your vocabulary, fluency, and coherence.

❗️The sample answer above is just a product of general knowledge, not a true story I personally know.

The maps illustrate what changes have taken place in an Australian zoo since 1960.

Overall, the zoo layout has undergone a profound transformation. Of particular note is the introduction of a cable car, a wild animals section, and an additional entrance by the water.

In 1960, the zoo, bordering a harbor to the north, had only one entrance from the south with a gift shop to its right. This commercial feature has been expanded, becoming a two-storey building, and the Australian animals section to the left of the entrance has remained unchanged. The same is true for the areas for the seal show and the picnic area, which have stayed unaltered on the eastern side.

Since 1960, the zoo has relocated and removed some of its facilities while introducing several new ones. The designated section for African animals in the northwest has been relocated next to the shop, making room for wild animals. The area no longer contains chimpanzees but has added a new entrance for those coming by water and a cable car system just before the picnic area.

The maps illustrate what changes have taken place in a health center since 2005.

Overall, the area has witnessed a profound transformation over the period. Of particular note is that both the hospital layout and parking lot have experienced expansion, with the introduction of a minor operations room and a children’s play area at the expense of the garden.

In 2005, the hospital, surrounded by a garden, had a car park to the south with space for 12 cars. This lot faced an entrance leading directly to a reception desk with seats on both sides of the hallway. Behind the desk were a physiotherapy room and an office on the left, with both remaining unchanged. The area accommodated three consulting rooms: one to the left and two to the right of the entrance.

Since then, the area has seen the relocation of several facilities, the introduction of new ones, and the expansion of several others. The entrance has moved to the south-western corner, and the front desk to its immediate left. The number of consulting rooms has increased to four, and a minor operations room and a children’s play area have been introduced next to the physiotherapy room and to the right of the entrance, respectively. The car park has expanded its capacity, accommodating 18 more vehicles.

✍️The two sample reports above follow different structures in organizing their body paragraphs. While the first divides information into separate paragraphs based on specific alterations, the second simply describes the first map in Body A with unchanged facilities, followed by changed features in Body B.

How you organize information and divide paragraphs should always depend on the diagram itself. There’s no single “magic” structure that guarantees a high score.

💬So, if your teacher insists there’s only one correct way to write a map report or any other diagram, tell them to go learn what coherence and cohesion actually mean.
