The Germanic input
Germanic people were in contact with the Roman Empire, working as mercenaries or rural workers. As soon as the 3rd century CE some settled in Gaul. Others came as invaders during the crumbling of the Roman Empire.
Gaul saw a reduction of the Latin influence with Germanic settlements & invasions. This brought on a simplification of Latin, which had already started. Settlers were often of military stock granted lands after their service. These newcomers spoke a non educated language called Vulgar Latin. Some likely did not have Latin as their mother tongue. This might explain why sometimes Roman languages have words with different Latin origins but corresponding meanings. For instance to eat is manger in French but comer in Spanish (the 1st comes from Latin manducare, meaning to chew, to masticate, while the 2nd comes from Latin comere; to eat).
On the boundaries of Gaul some non Romance languages strengthened or maintained their vitality, as we will see in the following post.

Ancient Roman marble statue of a panther with a goat's head between the legs.
Thought to be part of a large group of sculptures found at Hadrian's Villa in the 18th century, the panther was actually found on one of the estates known as "Old Rome" (Roma Vecchia).
Due to the restoration of the ancient surface by caustic acid etching, it gives the impression of the work of the 17th or 18th century.

ποΈ This nearly 2,000-year-old sapphire ring is a dazzling piece of jewelry thought to have belonged to Caligula, the notoriously tyrannical ancient Roman emperor.
Caligula ruled from 37 CE, but his reign was cut short after four years when he was assassinated by Praetorian Guardsβthe security force that was meant to protect the emperor. Sapphires are exceptionally hard, and it would have taken quite a bit of skill to not only cut and polish the sapphire but also to carve the delicate portrait on the front of the ring. The design appears to be a portrait of Caesonia, Caligula's fourth and last wife. ποΈ

ποΈ Plaster cast of a child's face, from a mould accidently made when the cement seal of the sarcophagus leaked inside and covered the child's face, found in France in 1878, Roman, 1st century CE
Handwritten French label on the reverse of this tiny plaster cast explains its history. In 1878, a stone Roman burial sarcophagus was found in the gardens of a Paris convent. When a tiny Roman child died 1800 years before, cement sealing the sarcophagus leaked inside and formed a mould of the childβs face. This plaster cast was created using that mould sometime between its discovery and 1920. The translation states the child was buried with a perfectly preserved small glass bottle. However, there is no indication of the cause of death.
The label indicates the child came from ArΓ¨nes de LutΓ¨ce, a prosperous and important Gallo-Roman town within modern day Paris. The Roman remains of ArΓ¨nes de LutΓ¨ce were rediscovered in the 1860s during excavations ποΈ
